This makes the area favourite with British and French alike, for seaside and country homes close to the services of major towns. The ease of access via the A10 motorway, which bisects the department, the TGV at Angouleme, and the competitive air fares to La Rochelle and Bordeaux, add to the benefit of location for the property owner, and tourist alike. The protected coastline of the Marais is a Twitcher’s delight, a haven for shore birds, herons, and rare species. The flora and fauna attract thousands of visitors a year, and there are several nature reserves along the coast. For the sportsperson, almost every activity seems to be covered, from golf at Royan and Saintes, equestrian centres, surfing, sailing, horse racing, fishing lakes, and for adults trying their luck, a casino at Jonzac. International and world events take place in the region, sailing at La Rochelle, jet-ski offshore championship, film festivals, music concerts, show jumping, wine festivals and many more - Further Reading
